THE NILE, 1 AUGUST 1798

By 1798 the French had defeated the combined armies of Europe and were now considering an amphibious attack on Britain. However, France’s most successful general Napoleon Bonaparte proposed a much more ambitious venture. By attacking Egypt, he could threaten British control of India, and extend France’s influence throughout the Middle East. The ruling Directoire approved this wild scheme, and the Army of the Orient was gathered in Toulon. In June 1798 it slipped out to sea during a storm and headed to Malta, which was duly captured. From there the fleet of warships and transports headed east up the Mediterranean and made landfall in Alexandria on 29 June. Meanwhile, Lord St. Vincent, commanding the British Mediterranean Fleet, sent a strong detachment off in pursuit. It was commanded by Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson.
